January 7, 2009--Origin of the name Greyshoes.

In the late 1800’s, my grandfather left the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Eastern Arizona and enrolled at the Phoenix Indian School, a BIA boarding school. His given name meant greyshoes and was pronounced “Keth-le-bah”. The officials of the school created a new “American” name for him “Kay Ethelbah”. In honor of my father’s father, I sign my stone and bronze sculptures “GREYSHOES”.

September 10, 2009--Greyshoes is awarded first place!

During the 2009 Santa Fe Indian Market, the judges named Mountain Spirit Dancer the blue ribbon winner in the Realistc/Stylized Division of Stone Sculpture. Carved out of translucent Portuguese marble, my sculpture stands 34" high, is 29" wide, and 9" deep. It sits on a black granite base, and portrays an Apache Crown Dancer with ribbons and feathers flying!

This sculpture took me 3 years to complete and it is now "living" at the Red Sage restaurant at Buffalo Thunder resort 15 miles north of Santa Fe on NM Hwy 285.

Success with Avanyu-A Prayer For Rain! This Persian Onyx piece was named THE BEST STONE SCULPTURE AT THE 2011 SANTA FE INDIAN MARKET! This 41 inch wide sculpture depicts a three dimensional view of an Avanyu, The Water Serpent, which is frequently seen on the sides of Santa Clara black or red pottery. This type of onyx is honey colored, is translucent and was extremely hard to carve and to polish. I was inspired by dramatic Asian dragons carved out of jade that I saw while visiting Hong Kong and Szechuan Province, China in 1991.

September 19, 2011--Tragedy: During our Feast Day at Santa Clara Pueblo, August 12, 2011, my first cousin Bernice Naranjo and her 6 year old son Andrew, were viciously attacked by 3 pit bulls. Andrew spent a month in UNM Children's Hospital after nearly losing his leg due to his femoral artery being severed. Skin grafts were required and he is finally back home to be with his mother. Bernice suffered wounds over much her body, to her ears, head, arms and hands as she tried to pull the dogs off of her son. Bernice and Andrew will now be facing months, perhaps years of therapy and couseling.

The Santa Clara community has supported our sister and nephew by having raffles and other fundraisers, and I am auctioning off a beautiful sculpture entitled "Medicine Bear", hand carved from imported Italian alabaster. The dimensions are 8" high, 13" wide, and 3" deep. Retail price on this piece is $950 and it may be seen in my Stone Gallery in this website.
